Hard place to me sounds sort of flat, while a rock is almost certainly jaggard - so it would be a hard place so I could at least have a lie down and think about stuff.

Neither thanks, I've had my share of been stuck between a rock and a hard place, life's too short and I prefer to chill out these days.

If it was ayers rock then a rock (although as it is sacred I wouldn't go on it) so um I suppose a hard place then!
