In the days of Kerplunk and Dookie they were definately punk. Hell, Billy Joe made green hair the in-look. They kind-of lost their touch with Warning and slipped into the pop side. They were very much pop up until American Idiot, now they are punk-pop (if you compare songs like When September ends to songs like F.O.D. and King For a Day you'll see the difference). Thus, these days they are punk-pop.

They were punk, however like most things in punk they have turned pop because of the monetary rewards.
