I had a stillborn baby back in July and yesterday I got my first period since then. It was fine yesterday but last night it started to get very very heavy to the point I can't even wear a tampon even if it is super-plus! I'm soaking an overnight pad to the point where I must change it every hour. Also the cramps are terrible it actually feels like I'm in labor again! I'm actually trying to call the doctor right now but I can't get through! (I go to a huge hospital I don't know what the problem is)
Someone please give me your thoughts because I'm worried sick!

Okay my doctor just called me back and said that heavy bleeding, clots and bad cramps are normal the first time period after giving birth. She said that if I keep soaking a pad an hour over the next few hours that I should come in. Thanks everyone!

For some women, my mother and I included, the first one or two periods after childbirth are "catchup" cycles and your body's menstrual flow can be extra heavy.

Drink lots of fluids so you don't get dehydrated, and take a multiple vitamin with iron.

After your stillbirth (and please accept my sympathies for your loss... I know how that hurts!) did all the afterbirth and placenta come out normally? You may need a D & C at this point to be sure all that tissue is gone.

Did the doctors find a cause for the stillbirth? If you are plagued with endometriosis or fibroid tumors, both can cause stillbirths and the bleeding you're describing.

I suggest you call your doctor, and if you still can't get through to him, get someone to take you to the emergency room. If this much bleeding alarms you, you should go be checked.

My prayers are with you.

Well, after I had my son my first period was very very heavy! I couldn't believe it. I have always had extremely light periods. It did go back to normal but only after a few cycles. I think this is probably somewhat normal. You should definitely keep trying to get through to your doctor though. Mine was like that for the first 2 days of my period than it slowed down. Stay calm, most likely everything is fine! Good luck!

Definately see someone if you get lightheaded or any other symptoms. Also if the bleeding lasts more than a couple hours that heavy, I would go to the doctor. I bled pretty bad after my son was born. GOOD LUCK and I am so sorry for your loss!

i had a baby a few months ago, and my period was very heavy like u described it...i believe its normal.
its a way also for the body to expell what is left from the pregnancy.
however maybe you should get the hospital to give you a scan to make sure your body has expelled all of the placenta, if let in body it could be very dangerous

you can bleed very badly and bleed for over a week!
my wife never stopped for the first week. my son had cut her with fingernails on the way out which kept bleeding also. but be on the safe side and call out a doctor rather than go by yourself!

I believe everyone bleeds differently after anything like that, but if your worried, call your Dr to see if they want to see you or not.
