This computer can't connect to the ISP. (Windows XP, Rogers cable Internet) but other computers can.

The network card works. If I assign it's IP manually, it can exist perfectly on a LAN. Pings and file transfers work fine.

But if I have it obtain its IP and DNS info automatically and try to connect, it gets that default IP 169.etc.etc. (can't remember exactly, but you know what I mean) and it reports "Limited or no connectivity".

I even added a NEW network card and got the exact same results.

I have removed/disabled ALL firewalls, Norton is gone.

The Internet did work fine up until one day it would no longer connect to the Internet. No software/hardware changes or moves took place.

If I try to boot into "safe mode with networking", it halts on the line that says C:\{Some path I can't remember}\mup and waits about a minute until it reboots itself. Not sure if this part is helpful.

This is a very difficult problem to Google so any help or ideas is appreciated

Thank you for the answers so far. I also suspected a virus but I'll check the power management settings as well.

Going to leave it open awhile just in case!

Go into your BIOS setup and make sure that all advanced power management features are enabled. If this doesn't work, it's most likely a virus. At least one attacked the mup.sys file.

If you would select Obtain and Ip add and Dns automatically try checking your ip if its a valid ip of your ISP or not. Mostly, if an ip starts with 169 - probably you are using a router, but if not and you received the error LIMITED OR NO CONNECTIVITY even if your Local Area connection seems to be connected but its not letting you browse. Try following this steps for limited or no connectivity error : ( this is what i always do to my computer )

*Troubleshooting limited or no connectivity

Go to your NETWORK CONNECTIONS window, right click on LOCAL AREA CONNECTION and then select PROPERTIES. On the properties window, make sure that you do not have a check mark on NOTIFY ME WHEN THIS CONNECTION HAS LIMITED OR NO CONNECTIVITY and SHOW ICON IN NOTIFICATION AREA WHEN CONNECTED. Click ok. Close all open windows / programs and try browsing the internet.

Good Luck.
