There may be a bit of truth to it. "Sex and the City", basically considered a cultural phenomeon was often panned by critics as 4 women cast as gay men. That pretty much says it all.

Typically gay men tend to live in the more urban areas and thusly usually have their proverbial finger on the pulse of upcoming trends. It also seems that media that typically directs the course of culture--TV, fashion and music--has many gays who produce/design/perform. It's only natural that gay culture would eventually become somewhat mainstream.

Gay men have always highjacked politics for their own uses. Directing the course of culture, not likely....

this is based on the fact that most of the fashio, arts,and beauty industries and popluated by a high majority of gay men, thus they have had a substantial influence in our culture in those areas.
