You can only use cross over cable to connect two computer directly. Otherwise, you need regular cable.

Just to clarify. RJ-45 cables (also called ethernet cables, cat5 or cat6 cables or patch cables) come in two types: straight-through and cross-over. A cross-over cable is called that because the 8 individual strands inside the cable are put in the reverse order at one end compared to the other. This is only used in special situations such as connecting two PCs' ethernet ports directly together, and in the past when connecting network hubs to each other.

If I can assume that your reference to an 'RJ45 cross cable' means a cross-over cable, then the answer is 'no'; if it's a normal straight-through cable then yes (provided you've some form of network hub/switch/router which is itself connected to the internet in some way!).

It should say clearly on the plastic whether or not it's a crossover or straight through

no, you cannot connect to the internet using an RJ45 cross cable if you are connecting to a router. cross cables are usually used when you want to connect two computers directly or two routers directly. between a router and a computer you use a regular cable (straight-through cable)

RJ 45 cables connect to the routers that connect the computers in a LAN.
