They will definitely charge you. Depending on when you signed up and what your contract says most termination fees these days are $250-$300 per line. You see when you buy the phone, the company offers you a huge discount off the price of the phone. In exchange, they make you sign a contract for a 2 year agreement (basically ensuring them a profit).

These companies are in the business of making money, and they're going to no matter how you terminate that contract. If you port your number to another carrier, just call and stop a line of service or even in some cases (depends on the company) they will give you a termination fee if you move out of their coverage area.

The thing you have to think about is will it save you money switching to another carrier or dropping that line of service. Will it save enough to cover that termination fee? For example if you have an add-a-phone on a family plan for $10 a month and you only have 8 months left on your contract, it probably wouldn't make any sense to terminate the contract. You are only going to pay out $80 over the next 8 months to keep it, versus the $250 to terminate it.

On the other hand, if you get no service where you are sometimes it pays to bite the bullet and pay the termination fee so you can switch to a carrier that offers coverage where you need it.
