Good question, and the ammonia/vinegar works well. Also, if you have need for more use Bon-Ami powdered cleanser. Bon Ami has no grit, so it's great for deep cleansing on glass.
In fact, GM used to market this as windshield cleanser...

have you done your dishes lately? try dishsoap easy on the hand and will cut the oil on the windsheild and a little in a bucket will do rest of car or headlights as well. a hand sprayer with a little dish soap and water works good too

There are special products to do this very well and you can ask any glazier at any auto windshield repair shop and they will be able to tell you,sell it to you,or tell you where to get it.

ammonia/vinegar and a lot of clean towels/newspapers. Microfiber works well.
