BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System. Basically it contains a set of instructions which your computer reads first when it is powered up to perform functions like self testing, as well as loading the operating system (like Windows XP, Linux etc) installed on your computer's harddisk.

Your BIOS is settings and preferences stored on a microchip on your computer. It's the first place your PC looks for instructions when you boot. It is OS independent.

It is a program on your PC that communicates relation between hardware and OS(operation System:windows) it works like a base for your PC if damage your P doesn't work at all.
