In the Illiad, it was a powerful blow capable of killing a lesser man but Achilles was no ordinary man. The legend is that he was dipped in the river Styx as an infant and held by his ankle in doing this. The rive would normally take the life of a person but in his case it made it impossible to take the live of Achilles, except if he was shot in the ankle. At that point his armored skin would be worthless to him. That is how Paris later kills him.

In the movie, no... the screenwriters did a good job. In the Iliad, the Gods played an important role as characters. In the movie, they may or may not have, but there was no visible proof to show they exist.

Ie. You could say Apollo guided the arrow into Achilles heel, since it was his only vulnerable spot... even though you didn't SEE him. You can see how the Trojans and Greeks at the time might mistake a warrior who was just EXTREMELY proficient as invincible, until finally they found him with arrows through his ankle.

Yes. Hector stroke Achilles (Bradd Pitt). But according to the prophesy, he was immune except his heels. So, when he tried to save his beloved, he was shot on his heel accidently. He was on his knees when he tried to help the girl out.
