If you mean diet as in cutting out all unhealthy or sugary foods, then absolutely. Changing your eating habits and eating more fresh fruits and vegetables is the best thing you can do for yourself and your baby. If you are talking about dieting to lose weight, then NO it wouldn't be in the best interest of you or your child. Breastfeeding in it's self will help you shed those pregnancy pounds as your uterine muscles contract as the baby feeds. You have plenty of time to get that pre baby shape back. Just be assured that you are the nutritional source for your baby right now and you look perfect to your baby. No one elses opinion of your looks matters right now.

Breastfeeding is kind of a diet, since it takes 800 calories a day at least in order to produce enough milk. Just don't eat junk food, and drink 3 or four glasses of water a day INSTEAD OF soda (we say "pop" in Canada).; that's a miminum - you need plently of fluids when breastfeeding. Also, care of a baby requires plenty of energy, so you'll start losing weight anyway. But don't satisfy your cravings by eating ice cream and treats all the time. Allow yourself a bowl of ice cream once a day, but when you get hungry, drink a glass of water, then eat a salad, then have a small meal. You're probably taking vitamins, so don't worry about nutrition - as long as you're eating reasonably healthy foods you and the baby will be gettring enough.

No - do NOT diet while breast-feeding. Your body is going to favor your baby, and it will just take nutrients away from you. Stick to a healthy diet; your baby won't drink more than he needs, and YOU need to remain healthy while he is living from your milk. If you're concerned, check with your doctor, or look online for the range of normal weight for a healthy baby of his age and ethnicity (which can matter). As long as it's within those norms (and I'm willing to bet it is), he's fine. If you see that he's over those norms (and that's a RANGE, not a single number), then it's time to talk with your doctor to rule out physical problems for HIM - but DON'T cut back on your own nutrition. This would be the WORST possible time.

You shouldn't have to diet while you're breastfeeding, if it's postnatal fat you're hoping to lose.
The breastfeeding itself will shed pounds of you in the first few months. Diet will simply mean less nutrients for the baby, and if you really have trouble with you're weight, rather wait until you're done breastfeeding, before going on a diet.

mother of five who breastfed all her children. it is not healthy to diet the way people do it these days at any time but especially if you are breast feeding. there are things you can do to help you lose the desired poundage though. understand that breast feeding contracts your uterus to make it stronger naturally, and takes lots of vitamins and protein from the mother. eat lots of lean meats like chicken and fish. you can eat salads but don't make them your staple as lettuce is purely water and fiber. vegetables and fruit are a healthy way to curb your appetite between meals. stay on your prenatal vitamins. don't eat high fat items and get lots of protein . take walks around the living room with your baby if you can't get outside. get a papoose carrier and take your baby with you. increase your motion by 30 minutes a day . you might start out making yourself a chart of your normal activities first and increase from there. also consult your pediatrician for further advice.

It's ok to diet while breast feeding as long as you do it in a healthy way. Don't use fat burners or diet pills. Eat sensably and exercise. A good plan may be Weight Watchers.

nope...whatever you eat will be passed on to your baby. SO if you diet, you may compromise your baby's nutrition intake.
