Seafrance from Dover is always cheapest. If you're doing it all the time, you should ask for a business account and that's even cheaper. Plus, that way you can turn up whenever you want and get the same low price everytime.
If it's just a one off, the best advice is to book well in advance and Seafrance is usually the cheapest.

There are only three methods - ferry from Dover via either P&O or SeaFrance, or via EuroTunnel. I have relatives who work for both P&O and EuroTunnel so you can guess which two I use for staff discount purposes ! :-)
From what I've seen, there's not really much in it between any of the major players on the cross-channel market. If you can book well in advance then the tunnel is just as cheap as the ferry, but for rolling up on the day, the ferry is probably best. Newspapers like "The Mail" seem to do cheap deals for travel to France by way of collecting tokens all the time, so it is always wise to keep an eye on the national press before travel to see if you can get one of those "France for a quid" deals. Given the amount of competition, deals change all the time.

Don't know the best but the cheapest would be to row or swim like that guy from the television. Don't know why you want to come here, france and germany and all the scandinavian countries are much nicer.

Much cheaper than the competition, I used them last year, they were excellent, even paid for "superior" seas and got free paper and a drink and was still cheaper than the ferry, and quick, I didn't feel sea sick at all.
