when ever moving Clouds filled with charged electron it gets discharged to earth by striking a lightning. mobile phone tower can acts as a conductor & make easier path for flowing a electron. It is false that mobile tower can protect an area of 1 KM radius. It all depends on how much energy stored in the clouds, if clouds are over charged it soon discharged to earth without waiting a highrise objects/structures.

A lightning rod protects an area below at a 45 degree angle, like a wigwam (cone) protects the ground under it. The mobile telephone tower would have to be about 1 km tall to protect a 1 km radius circle. Perhaps if it is installed 1 km high on a mountain it will give the coverage you mention. The protection stems from the fact that lightning will seek the easiest path to ground, either the lightning rod or the ground outside the protected zone.

Actually, it is true. Lightnings are likely to strike on big metal structures, so a mobile telephone tower is actually a big metal structure that is closer to the clouds than anything else. This is why they protect an area of approx. 1 km radius, because lightnings in that area are not likely to strike anything else but the tower.

Only if the area is really flat, and the tower is a really tall one. Lightning likes to go for the tallest object around.
