Has anyone in power asked the question?

What is it that they want? A socialist world? If they wont participate in the world as it is now and as it changes how can the DPRK survive?

The current regime in Pyongyang has virtually nothing to do with socialism.

It is effectively a monarchy (the former president being the dad of the current) protected by a cadre of ruling elite.

The vast majority starve and suffer, whilst the elite live in RELATIVE luxury - far less luxurious than we have in The West.

What the ruling class want is to hold on to their grip of power for as long as possible. They have no socialist dream, just power for power's sake.

It is the closest thing you will find in the world to George Orwell's 1984.

During the Cold War Churchill described the then communist Russia as a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. North Korea also fits that description admirably. There is no answer since the present government is obdurate to the point of being close to madness. We in the West only know what we are told about N Korea so, in the very best circumstances, we can only guess at the true situation. The future is perilous and must be handled with the siftest of kid gloves. China, it's closest neighbour and former ally, is the only country with the necessary clout to bring N Korea to heel. It may do so in view of the tremendous amouont of trade that China has with the West.

I think the government simply wants to be in power. As long as the government survives then they don't care about what happens to the people. I guess the gov't doesn't want to appear weak by having to ask for help.

As for their principle of self sufficiency they don't make anything (I guess expect big bombs) and are reliant on China and SKorea for food and fuel handouts.

As long as the govt is in power they don't have any desire to change the status-quo.

Same as every leader, make more money for leader. 50 year plan, make more money for children of leader.
Socialism is not that bad. No more Communism to fight over, well theres China, but they would whoop our tails. Socialism can work, but, it is flawed by Human Nature and greed, but its a good plan.
United States and Europe are not the World, yet.
The future is unwritten.

Well I doubt if Kim Jong il will still be in power. How old is he now. Maybe he has a son to take over like he took over from his dad (Kim Sung-il)?

I think it will be like in Russia when Stalin died. After Stalin his policies died, there was "de-Stalinisation and a complete reworking of the Communist party and it's own policy, becoming much more relaxed.
Maybe it will be like that in NK when Kim dies... NK will become more relaxed about it's policies and be less threatening to the rest of the world.

It matters not what North Korea's socio-political motivations are, ever see those arrogant strutting goose stepping troops march before? Remember Germany circa 1938? Remember Germany circa 1945? Do we ever learn from the past?

they are wanting to be in control of their country, under their own rule and sovereignty and not to fall to the same fate that fell upon the Iraqi's that being to become another state of the U.S of A.... think about it... if Iraq had the bomb as the nth Koreans now do, do you think that they would have been invaded... the nth Koreans have seen the fate that fell to an other country and are seeking to insure that they don't fall the same fate... they are now saying, as the U.S is already saying... if you attack us, you will be sorry..... for the record, i think no one should have the power to destroy the planet we call home... down with the bomb !!!
