Wait listed passengers, legally can not board the coach. They will be asked to get down. If not listening, they can be penalised. You can board unreserved coach. If Ticket Examiner allows you, you can board.

As per Railway rules U cannot board a resvertion compartment with a waiting list ticket still waiting or dropped.
Ur waiting list ticket should convert to RAC or Confirmed status before departure of the train for u to board. Otherwise U R strictly barred to enter.
What is the otherway arround.
The TTE of our Railways are the Openly Corrupted servants. Hence do not worry. U say it is only six hrs journey and if it is in daytime absolutely no problem. Just Tip the TTE with Rs20 to Rs30. He will not mind u travelling in Reserved coach. In case if the journey is in night then U have to tip him little high may be Rs50 to Rs150 depending on the route demand etc etc. Ideal is be friendly with the TTE and just tell him U will take care of him. Things will be okay. Happy Journey.

a wait list ticket does not guarantee u being able to board a train authentically. only with an RAC ticket can u do that. in RAC usually u get to share a berth, that is, u just get sitting place. so hope that your ticket gets upgraded to RAC from WL.
if u have a WL ticket u have not paid for reservation charges yet, only after confirmation the TC will collect the extra money from u. but most of the time there are vacancies, so just hope that u get one too.
reach he station a bit early, check out the list to see your status & see if u can request the TC to convert your ticket, usually it does happen. all the best.

Officially you can be fined but on humanitarian grounds, TC may allow you to sit if co-passengers co-operates. Or u can upgrade to next higher class if seats/berths available
