Can anyone recommend a good website that shows star charts and where the location of the planets are at certain times of the year so they can be viewed by the naked eye. Obviously not all the planets will be visible, but being able to look at a star like object in the sky and know it's Mars, Jupiter etc would be great!

Sky and telescope has a new magazine, and a corresponding website, that should be of assistance. Go to www.skytonight.com and take a look at their interactive sky chart.

You can buy some software called "Starry Night". It really is great for identifying heavenly bodies. You can simulate the night sky on any day of any year right on your computer screen. Once you find these objects, you can zoom in to see what they look like up close.
