It is to kill the taste of bad tequila. Good tequila does not need such tricks to hide its taste.

I don't know, maybe top guy is right. I just had to say I absolutely love the combination of salt and lime (ie. margarita) and the scent it gives off. So fresh and tangy, mmm mmm!
