I think you are referring to the Coefficient of relatedness. This is an abstract unit that quantifies how closely related you are to various memebrs of your family and is drawn up by looking at how much genetic material is shared between two people.

I have a coefficient of relatedness (CoR) of 1 with my sister, because we have the same parents and share the same sources of genetic material. I have a CoR of 0.5 with my father and 0.5 with my mother. This can be extrapolated to any memeber of your family.

So to answer you questions - it is an abstract number drawn up on how much genetic material you share with another family member.
