It is the time of winter in southern hemisphere. That is starting from June ,July and August. This time in the contrary summer for northern hemisphere and sunny.

Depends on where you are in Antarctica. South Pole has the longest dark period. The sun sets March 21 and rises Sept 21. There is about a month of twilight. So 4 months - May to August - which is totally dark. On the coast it is often much shorter. Just weeks around mid winter, which is June 21.
