Larger lenses give better resolution, and gather more light.

I would guess one way is better resolution: why is a 6 megapixel camera better than a 2 MP one? You probably wouldn't even need a microscope to do your bio.

Second would be night vision. Larger eyes would gather more photons when they are scarce, so something that might not be visible to us would be to something with eyes like that. Why do you think giant squids, which live deep in the sea where there is little light, have eyes like dinner plates?

As for others, I doubt our depth eprception would be much changed, and there is no reason to expect that our visual spectrum would be any different - unless we grew new types of cells as well as more of them we could still not appreciate ultraviolet flowers like bees can.

But the costs of such eyes are far too high for the benefits. Aside from the difficulty in protecting them and having to carry them around, the energy it would take to grow and maintain them would be high, and the brain needed to make sense of all that data would also carry a high cost.
