South Central LA was a different place in the 1960s versus the 1970s versus the 1980s, etc. I grew up in Compton, and didn't think it was bad, but this attitude is also based on your parents, friends, family, etc, and how that perception is shared. We weren't dirt poor (rich neither), and I didn't do drugs, though I had friends and know of others who did (low end stuff). I lived in a decent house, went out with my friends on weekends, my parents worked, I went to school and yes, even graduated high school and went to college. Looking back, south central has a bad rap for the bad things that the media ONLY choose to show --- rarely did they show the good things that happens - like the fact that Rosecrans Ave has been under beautification, and that a youth baseball academy finds is home in Compton. Sad how folks only remember the bad stuff - this stigma sticks with folks, who know no better.

Honestly if south central didn't have airplanes constantly buzzing overhead it would be prime real estate with million dollar homes. When my car died I had to take the bus to and from work between Hollywood and Inglewood and I was the only white person on the strech through south central. After a few days of riding regularly people started to recognize me and they stoped staring at me like I was about to kill them or something... then people opened up and started talking to me on the bus ... they're just normal folks.

There isn't enough space on this page for my opinion. So take a look at what the encyclopedia has to say about South Central.

INTELLIGENT humans that value their lives and their wallets stay the hell out of most places in big cities. Don't be assuming it's because people are white, unless you are saying only white people are intelligent.
