On similar reality shows that often capture footage of individuals before they have had a chance to consent, many people have their faces blurred out (Real World, COPS, etc.) On the show "To Catch a Predator", I have never seen a perp's face blurred out. Do they have to consent to this? If so, are they compensated either by NBC (Presumably for cash) or by the Police (Presumably with plea deals)? My roommate and I are baffled. Someone explain!

It probably falls under some clause where if you enter someone else's premises, whether it be lawfully or unlawfully, you are subject to surveillence (implied consent) or something of that nature.

Apparently, from what I heard on the show, there is something called "free media" and since its a news program, that is media. Some call it "free press". I guess they don't have to get your consent in that case. Although COPS would have to ask for consent because it is not "in the news", that is, unless it's a huge deal that the media would grab up for their reasons.

I think they were found guilty, that's why their footage
can be shown.
I wondered about the payment thing for the ones
found on Oprah's show.
