does it have something to do with that tome of the month? I am 37 and love to make sure the woman gets twice as many as me

Nature! Our bodies are made so that when we have an orgasm, our vagina contracts, and pulls the semen deep into the cervix, into the tubes where the sperm will meet the egg and possibly create a pregnancy. That's nature's purpose in it, to aid in pregnancy!
However, most of us want it because it feels AWESOME! Why let the guy have all the fun, right?

It represents completion.. when it is not attained, leaves one feeling less than complete. To see the male falling over and going to sleep is not exactly an exciting event.. being left out of that experience is not the woman's favorite dream. It creates a finality for the female.
