A company in the US has filed a H1b visa petition for me .. I have also set up a visa date in november. now that my petition is not yet processed I may have to postpone my interview date. In the mean time my present company in India has setup a visa date for me in the B1 slot in october. I cannot openly tell my present company abt H1. So will going for a B1 visa interview affect my H1B interview in any way?

Sure he can. But his chances to succeed are smaller than winning millions in the lottery. There are currently about 25 million people in the U.S. unemployed or underemployed, and any potential corporate sponsor would have to proof to the U.S. Department of Labor that they couldn't find anybody within the 312 million people who reside in the U.S. who can do what your friend can do. He must be so special that if I type in his name in my browser window, that I can read about his achievements in the sciences. In addition, there is an annual limit on the number of those work visas which are made available. The quota for the next fiscal year usually become available an April 1st. Companies that want to sponsor workers usually flood USCIS with petitions at that time. Traditionally, the available visa slots are allocated within a week or two. An employer can submit a petition after that, but it will be denied because the slots have all been allocated. If the petition is accepted and approved then the visa will usually be approved within a few months. Your friend can't start working until the beginning of the fiscal year your visa is issued for, which is October 1st., and in order to get the visa, he'd be interviewed at the U.S. consulate in Mumbai.
