The nurse may have had you lie down to relax the buttocks muscles. I get an intramuscular shot in the butt every week. In my experience, the shot usually does not hurt unless the muscle is flexed. I usually stand on one foot, relax the other hip where the shot is administered. I think it is best to give the shot toward the outside and top of the buttock. For me, the shots really hurt if my muscle is flexed or tense.

I am a nurse and I have given injections in a lot of different positions. It depends on the situation, what is being given, how deep the needle must go in etc. Remember to relax and do not tense up your muscles or it will be sore the next day!

If you are an adult most of the time you can stand and lean forward on the exam table. Children need to lay down in order for them to be held down so they dont kick and squirm.
