sensors in the street.

There is a little man inside the traffic light. He looks out for me when ever I come to a light and he changes it to RED so I have to stop.

Older lights have mechanical timers, newer computer and pressure sensors under the road surface.

Some are on timers and some have an "eye" that tells them when traffic is waiting at the light...similar to the "eye" of the automatic doors.
