They discovered we were thinking about putting on a small addition, on our huge lot, which would be within codes, ie,
do not need their approval. They want us to move, are mean and are saying things to neighbors, especially when someone new moves in. Should I just ignore them, or bring it up to people I think they are telling lies to?

You have not broken any law, but they have slandered you.

Do you have a town council where you can approach for some neighboulry mediation help (perhaps a mediator can help stop their nonsense)? Do you intend to seek legal action? If so, do you have proof they are slandering and invading your privacy by spreading lies?

Sometimes, all you need is a properly drafted legal letter (that looks like it comes from a lawyer) to warn them. If they ignore and continue abusing you, you decide if you wish to sue your neighbour.

These are your options.

I don't think your neighbours need you to tell them they are mean. They know it but just won't acknowledge it. Contrary to what they think, what they are doing is cowardly.

If you wish the problem would go away on its own, time and your patience are your friends. Till you make up your mind what you want to do next, your neighbour does not merit any of your neighbourly attention. Ignore these "mouth-filthy" cowards and get on with your good life.

We have the same problem These lots are zoned r 10 that means 10000 sq ft per family or single family house. The houses are all about the same value. This neighbor wants to build shacks on his lot and rent it out to riff raff. They will have to park their cars on the street blocking traffic etc, This will bring down the value of all the houses in the neighborhood. Then his ghetto friends can afford to move in and take over.

Approach other neighbours with caution, it's higly likely that they feel the same way about them (these kind of people are generally not liked), you're probably not the first to be in their sights. Gather support from other neighbours than stand up to them, otherwise they'll keep hassling you for the rest of your time there.

As Machiavelli suggests, "seek to avoid things that render him odious and contemptible" and "seek to show greatness... and strength in his actions... that he maitains such standing that nobody thinks to decieve or outwit him." In other words divide and conquer, win the support of others and issolate them if you need to, run a smear campaign against them, and slowly destroy them (if thats your thing).

Oh no, you have a Misses Kravitz in your neighborhood. She was the neighbor across the street on the show Bewitched. The truth is, is that people are probably talking about her now, more than they are you. I wouldn't worry its your house and your yard you live in so screw her.

Live your life as if they don't exist. When you get outraged at this sort of stuff it usually means there is some truth to it. If there isn't, then ignore them. Rise above the need to "defend" yourself to someone else, don't lower yourself to their level.

Ignore them, don't talk about them, and try not to think about them.
