Hi Ava -- Propoxyphene is just barely a narcotic analgesic. Hardly effective at all. Plus it's loaded up with so much acetaminophen that it will damage your liver. Is it effective at relieving your back pain? A couple Tylenol tablets are more effective than Propoxyphene. I don't understand why your physician prescribed such an ineffective med for you.
Vicodin is different in that it's a combination of hydrocodone and acetaminophen. Some people do not respond to Vicodin, and for them I suggest Tylenol with codeine. Preferably Tylenol 4. If you live in or near Canada you may purchase Tylenol 1 with codeine, no prescription required. They keep the stuff behind the pharmacy counter, so you have to ask for it.

Yes, it's a narcotic. Vicodin is also a narcotic.
Vicodin combines a narcotic analgesic (painkiller) and cough reliever with a non-narcotic analgesic. Dentists give it for teeth pain.

Propoxyphene is a very popular pain reliever, widely known as "Darvon", that is a centrally acting narcotic analgesic. Commercially, propoxyphene is usually combined with aspirin or some other simple pain killer in a single tablet or capsule. This drug, which is similar to methadone, has been widely abused and is tightly controlled. Side effects can include physical addiction, confusion, convulsions, dizziness, low blood pressure, and weakness. Hope this helps!

Why is this medication prescribed?
Propoxyphene is used to treat moderate to severe pain.
It is an opioid analgesic (related to opium) similar to methadone. The use of opium is at least 2300 years old. In 1806, the first alkaloid of opium was isolated by Serturner. He called it morphine, after the Greek god of dreams, Morpheus. Codeine was identified in 1832. Propoxyphene is half to two-thirds as potent as codeine, meaning that 90 to 120 mg of propoxyphene provides as much pain relief as 60 mg of codeine. This is comparable to the pain relief achieved by 600 mg of aspirin.
Opioid analgesics, including propoxyphene, reduce pain by blocking the receptors in the brain that are involved in the perception (sensing) of pain. Because combinations of opioids (such as propoxyphene or codeine) and either aspirin or acetaminophen produce additive pain relieving effects, they are often found in combination in several drugs
propoxyphene is a class IV narcotic
vicodin is also a narcotic that is prescribed to relive pain but it is also in the class of narcotics called narcotic analgesics.
