I'm trying to think of an upbeat piece of music with no words that is often times heard at the start of a horse race. It's probably a modern classical piece.

It's the William Tell Overture by Rossini.

This piece is associated with horse racing because it was used in the Lone Ranger (you know that masked guy riding the horse.)

Its not the William Tell overture... as far as I know its a thirty-note trumpet fanfare commonly known as the "call to the starting gate"

Its usually played by a single trumpet, fanfare/natural trumpet, or even on a bugle. It can also be played as a two- or three-trumpet fanfare.
