It is "human nature" for destress by creating jokes or even snide remarks about the things we may have no complete control over. The "horrible' or "funny" mum-in-law jokes started as a result I think!
Females takes the cake when it comes to the "worrying" and mothering roles. (For men, they are good at blocking out anything unpleasant, including naggy wives.) The role of the worrying female doesn't stop when her son marries. And this may be a problem.
It's when a mum-in-law's decision is different from that of the son (and daughter-in-law) and she insists on forcing her own opinions and decisions upon them (while son and daughter-in-law have other plans made), gives ppl the impression that she is a meddlesome, troublesome pesty witch out to wreck her son's marriage (she may think he is better of without his wife or that no other woman can hold a candle to her). And the son finds himself caught in abattle between mum and wife.
Couples then start to ask each other,"Did I marry you or your mum?"
Realistically, mother-in-laws can only advise and suggest or recommend, but she can't insist her son/daughter-in-law do things her way all of the time.
No matter how many years a son has been living with his mother before he got married, a mom-in-law should not forget that their married son is already an adult.

Because your mother-in-law believes her little girl would do anything to please her man. Nothing you can do to change that short of making a pass at her then see if she believes you! See if your wife would agree to you taking a lover for no-strings sex because you're feeling so badly done to. You could try masturbation ... in front of her or somewhere you might get caught by her ... then she might get the message! I've gone without for over 3 years now even with all the talking and stuff ... a woman down the street occasionally gives me a b j to keep me from exploding but even that's not enough! So I know how you feel.

I've heard, real, horror stories of mother-in-laws. I can't really think of any with father-in-laws. Maybe it has to do with woman in general. Woman can think up some very snotty and vindictive things to do. Not to put down men I'm sure they can be vindictive too. But such things as purposely buying horrible gifts. Cleaning their house even though it's clean, just to get under the daughter-in-laws skin. I think with men they would rather take quick stabs and cheap shots. They wouldn't sit around planning ways to make someone's life misrable.

Not that this is going to be a comprehensive answer, but what I find interesting is that this is not something limited to region or time. History and studies of other cultures show us that the mother/daughter-in-law dynamic (the struggle, the agnony, the competition, etc.) is there over and over again. So while you've perhaps heard it over the years on television, this is actually something that pre-dates television by a very long time.

It's sad that all mother in laws get punished for what only a few are guilty of. I have a ex-mother in law that is such a b...h that even her own husband doesn't want to be around her. I do know of a lot of mother in laws that are extremely nice and get a bad wrap. To all of you who are the exception, we appreciate you more than you will ever know. God Bless You!!!

I think it comes from a time when mocking mothers in the movies or on TV was taboo. Knocking mother-in-law was a sly way of getting around the convention.

They just tend to have trouble letting their kids go. Dad's are more relieved, Mom's cling.

thats an easy one.....mother in laws....well mine anyway....feel thats she has to compete with me....for the love of their son and grandchildren.....in her eyes i can generally do nothing right....and the way she talks and treats me when we are on our own is totally different to the way she conducts herself when my hubby is around......for example while my hubby is about shes so nice to me and tells him how lucky he is to have me....great hey....well take hubby out of the room and she will say.....just wait until your kids get older and you have to learn to accept their partner whether you like them or not.....WTF.......so i think mother in laws that are meddling and interferring deserve all the bad jokes that can be thrown at them.....my father in law is adorable and i have nothing but the utmost respect for him.....
