Cubism was still not abstract painting as Picasso and Braque always ment to represent something or someone, but it got pretty close to it. Their state of mind would still not accept painting to be abstract. later on, painters who were influenced by cubism, were those who 'invented' abstract art.
On the other hand abstract way of thinking (in a way can be notised in cave paintings - in case of signs, even maps they painted. Still, I believe that the state of mind of people in paleolith cultures was not able to accept any kind of painting as abstract as for them there was no difference between reality and the painting.
So I gues abstarct art requires a state of mind first, a relationship to arts in a certain way, and only then works of art.
I would be happy to hear more thoughts on this tipic! Is there someone who disagree? would be happy to hear!
