What to feed

• Makes chewing motions
• Shows significant weight gain (birth weight has doubled)
• Shows interest in food
• Can close mouth around a spoon
• Can move food from front to back of mouth

• Seems hungry after 8 to 10 feedings of breast milk or 40 oz. of formula in a day
• Is teething

• Breast milk or formula, PLUS
• Semi-liquid iron-fortified rice cereal, THEN

Assuming the baby is over six months, yes.

Prior to that you need to be careful with home-made carrot & beet babyfood. (Because they are root vegetables, they can soak up certain soil-contaminants. The trace amounts are not a problem for a child over six months.)

But then, you shouldn't be feeding them solids before that age anyway. :) (Per the American Association of Pediatricians.)

Red beets are sweet and nutritious. Your baby should love them.
