Yes, I have seen it.

"It's about a young Jewish American who flies to the Ukraine in search of a woman who helped his grandfather escape Europe during World War II; he has a photograph and the name of a village. He hires the Odessa Heritage Tours, made up of a crazy old man and his English-speaking American-loving grandson. The three, plus grandfather's deranged seeing-eye-dog, travel in an old car from Odessa into Ukraine's heart. Jonathan, the American, is a collector, putting things he finds into small plastic bags, so he will remember his experiences & his past. Alex, the interpreter, is an archetypal wild and crazy guy. Alex asks the old man, "Was there anti-Semitism in the Ukraine before the war?" Will they find the village? The past illuminates everything. "

It was a good movie, but it isn't anything I am in a rush to see again. Although, I did love the use of the song "Start Wearing Purple" by Gogol Bordellos off their Gypsy Punk album.

I thought the movie centered around the shooting that took place in the small village and how that one event effected all the characters live's. Finding out what happened there gave some resolution to each of the characters, good or bad. "Everything is illuminated in the light of the past."

Basically its about a jewish-american kid (Elijah Wood) and his search for what happened to his grandfather in WW2. He hires ukranian guides (boy and his grandfather) and they interview the only survivor of the village, who tells the boy what happened to his grandfather. The Nazi's locked everyone in a synogogue and barred the doors and burned it down. It is revealed that the grandfather, tho jewish, pretended not to be so that he wouldn't die as well - and was plagued by guilt from the event.

The book is a lot better than the movie tho.
