Currently I have a 6600GT(going to sell it on ebay) in a year old computer(2005).I need a video card around $150.That'll give me more performance boost in games for at least another year or two.I was thinking ATI's x850xt...anyone know of the NVIDIA counterparts? My 6600GT can still handle most old games at high settings and the newer games at medium to high settings. The newest games are where it starts to tax my card a bit.

Games that I play:
CS:S
DOD:S
FEAR
Rome Total War
Medieval Total War 2*(Mainly getting the upgrade for this game...I ran the demo and it was getting kind of choppy at high settings.)

Well you didn't say whether you have PCI Express or AGP, so I will try to find one from each company for each platform
AGP nVidia:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130051
AGP ATI:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814142072
PCIE nVidia:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150182
PCIE ATI:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814161026

Even with all this you failed to mention the ram of the video card. Something that should play all these games is probably a 128 mb ddr ram video card, I think.
ATI and NVIDIA make the best video cards.

But what are you asking really?

Use these 2 sites. Newegg for the prices and Tom's Hardware for the comparisons.
Maybe Radeon X1600 or X1650.

i have a 1600xt and that is enough to play cs:s but gives me 40+ fps with max settings under 1440x900 res. i do not feel any lag at all and is cheap. i was about to get x850 but the ati 1k series are better. i recommend getting 1900xt or higher or get nvidia 7900gt.

a GeForce 6800 would do you quite well for those games. running at 350mHz with 256mb onboard, this bad boy will do you for a while still. granted its not going to be the best card you'll buy, it will definitly do the trick for your price range. checkout the link, NCIX in Vancouver has a sale on them right now

I have a 7600GS and it whoops the *** off any game I can throw at it. Keep in mind that throwing games at your video card might damage it.

ALWAYS use Nvidia.
