Hi Cammie,
My understanding of college homecoming, is that traditionally it does revolve around football, it is a time for former students and graduates (alumni), to get together and remember "the good ole days", and parents to visit their children who are attending the college. Sometimes there is a "homecoming" dance. The homecoming King and Queen preside over the dance. When they go out on the dance floor to dance (usually, but not always a slow dance) everyone stops for a minute and gives them special attention. They are usually chosen by the student body along the lines of most popular in the school. Often times the King is a football hero and the Queen is one of the most popular women in the school. They are dressed up and look really great. Homecoming is a time for friends old and new to catch up with each other and find out what's happening--go out to dinner together, visit sororities and fraternies--just a time of friendship all revolving around the college and those who are loyal to it.

Homecoming football games are usually held during the last or second to last home game. Like high school there is a week of festivities. Sororities and Fraternities will have socials (parties), alumni come into town, students vote for homecoming queen and king (but some schools only have queens) and its a game that has more hype. And most schools will schedule a big rivalry game.

Homecoming is used as a game to bring back alumni. They also have a King/Queen and court that is usually all full of fake real good looking people that no one really cares about. Some schools have parades and other activities. It was a lot bigger "back in the day" and not as relevant now.

No, it's just a football game with more hype around it - usually there are events on campus and a homecoming king and queen are crowned.

Its pretty much pointless. Its just a gimmick to get alumni to return and visit the campus.
