Go to indianrail.gov.in website and to left u will find pnr status written a, click it and fee ur ticket no. u will get the status no. (close any other boxes which open up) .

www.indianrail.gov.in is good .. but for me the easiest and the quickest way is sms-ing the PNR number to 8888 as :
PNR 1234567890 [your 10 digit PNR number]
