I absolutely hate cockroaches. I don't know if there's a phobia for fear of cockroaches or bugs, but whatever it is I dislike them tremendously. I just want to know what my fellow apartment living people do to keep cockroaches away. Anything would help and would be much appreciated.

Couldn't find a good category for this one, hopefully enough people will see it.

Don't have any food or wrappers or food scraps sitting on the counters or in cabinets. Everything must be either refrigerated or in sealed plastic, metal, or ceramic containers. No food scraps in the sink or in the garbage can under the sink.

Cockroach killing agents depend on if you have pets or small children who put things in their mouths.

Since cockroaches can't burp, adding baking soda to a little bacon grease works. The cockroaches explode after they eat the grease as the gas expands in their bodies. This won't hurt kids or pets if they get into it.

You can also use boric acid powder, which is cheap but best kept away from kids and pets. Sprinkle it in hidden places or mound it in little dishes like ashtrays shoved under the stove or sink.

However, even the cleanest homes acquire cockroaches sometimes. They are some of the hardiest creatures on Earth, and there are cockroach impressions in early fossil records that look just like today's version.

Cockroaches are attracted to filth and places with food lying around. I suggest you ask your landlord/super AND tenants (because supers do LIE) in the building if there has been any problems with cockroaches. If they have (and the landlord/super admits it) then I would have them put some kind of cockroach bait into the cracks in your cupboard. This will help prevent any of the cockroaches in the other "dirty apartments" from establishing anything in your place.
If your apartment doesn't have this GROSS history then I suggest keeping your place clean - don't leave crumbs lying around or sticky messes on the counter or in cupboards. Also, if you buy a good roach spray (I recommend Dr. Doom, it's about $20 a spray can, but works better than any of those RAID products) and spray around any cracks/openings you see in your walls that lead outside or to another apartment. Also, spraying in teh cracks of your cupboards will help too.
Hope that calms your fear!

I agree! Yes, I think we are taught this. And alot of times people
think it is from filth, and which because I've been taught this I agree. What makes it bad for u is living in an apartment, maybe a
tenate has already left. And the manager hasn't got the place cleaned out yet, and then when they do. The roaches run to where the next available food source is. The only solution is to ask your landlord to spray (entire building). Also, filth isn't the only
thing that could cause them. Believe it or not alot of times they come from when we go to buy grocerys. (could be your market.)
In either case once you have them, they are hard to get rid of! It's better to spray either way. Hope this helps.

use a Raid fogger, it works for 3 months so you just need to fog the affected area, there are usually 3 in a package. Dont leave any food around, or leave any crumbs when you eat or cook. These foggers work for all bugs not just roaches. You can get these at a super market or Home Depot

Are you in Texas?

I knew a woman doctor there who got a gecko (lizard) to keep the cockroaches at bay. But then you have to put up with a lizard. I think both are pretty bad.

Good luck!

Boric acid, it is very effective when used properly for killing
cockroaches and most other insects.
You can also get a house lizard, they are natural enemies and will eat them. More information at http://tinyurl.com/ofxkk
