256mb really will not give you that big of an increase. My first question is what primarily are you using your machine for? Second, how fast is your processor?

In any event, I'd put atleast a gig of ram into it to increase performance. If you're a heavy gamer, throwing a video card with lots of memory on it will greatly increase performance in this area.

Don't increase your virtual memory, this won't give you an increase in speed, it might actually decrease it since its running off the hard drive which is slower then RAM.

Increase the virtual memory space on your disk.
Virtual memory is the swap space alloted on the hard disk. It has a minimum and a maximum value. Usually minimum is equal to the physical RAM on your pc. and the maximum is two and half times the RAM.
You can find the virtual memory setting on the location in winXP
start > control panel > system > advanced > performance settings > Advanced > Virtual Memory Change
select the hard disk partition.
select the custom size radio button. Enter values.Press OK
Allocate VM on all partitions of the hard disk.

If you don't notice ANY difference, then either your BIOS needs to be set up for the added memory OR you just need to 'unseat' the memory you've added and re-insert it again. Sometimes, when you add memory, you must take the chip out and put it back in several times before it 'takes' properly. good luck :-)

Ram doesn't give you speed it just gives you more memory to work with to run more programs at the same time.

If you want speed you will have to get a bigger drive. Probably in the 1 to 2 mhrz (megahurtz)....

Good Luck
