Last I heard Australia had a complete ban on some weapons, heavy licensing for others. No "heirloom" clause, so I'd suggest papier-mache weapons, or perhaps really sharp photographs...
Or you could move to America, the last English-speaking nation whose citizens are still allowed to go armed. Temporarily.

You'd best consult the chief law enforcement official in your world down there, mate. Things are queer there about guns, right now. I suspect that crossbows probably fall under the heading of "assault weapons"!
