Amanda, get a pap smear, you cannot slow down a period.
If it is extremely heavy, you need to see a doctor. Don't gamble with your life a pap smear can save your life and its faster and easier than surgery. You might have something wrong with your uterus and uterine cancer is one of the easiest and has the best survival rate. I don't want to scare you, but it is important that you bite the bullett and get a smear. PLEASE!

dont stress, your body may just be changing. It is important to have a pap though to rule out any serious problems. At the start of the year I came off the pill , since then I have very heavy and painful periods. I was really worried about this and went to the doctors where I had ultra sounds, pap and heaps of other tests. It turns out I am just one of the unlucky people who has an intense period, all the tests and ultrasound were fine. I have also started taking a prescription uterus anti inflammatory called 'ponstan' which helps a bit.
Good luck.

If you really have been having these systems it is important to go see an obgyn soon because that is the number one sign of having fibroids, which is left uncontrolled can become very painful. In rare cases it can be a sign of cancer. Paps are no picnic, but they are a necessity. Just relax, ask a friend for a referral and get it done with. If everything comes back normal, you do not need another one for three years, and you can get your birth control too. Just bite the bullet!

This is what I have done, with great success. I bought a little bottle of "Dong Quai Supreme" at a health food store. (When I couldn't find this, another form of dong quai would work.) I would drink the whole bottle on the first day of my period. This would make the period lighter. I did this for several months and it got lighter each month, until I thought it was a little too light, so I didn't take the dong quai anymore until the next time it got too heavy. The bottle costs about $10 and I only took it once a month.

well, my periods didn't slow down no matter what type of birth control I was on, eccept for the ortho shot. for me, it was having a baby. every time i hada baby, when my cycle returned it was lighter and shorter. now i can't even use a tampon because there isn't enough fluid, and it only lasts a day and a half about. i can't wait to see what i get for a period once i stop breastfeeding. but i bet you aren't yet ready to have children. you could go on the ortho evra patch. it's better than the pill i think. don't go on the ring though. it falls out. i would check into herbal remedies. i would go to a natural remedy store or a homeopathic doctor and tell her about your woes. there must be an herb out there that will calm down the ole shedding of those uterine walls....there seems to be an herb to cure everything!

I just wanted to let you know that you're not the only one out there. For the past 7 years, I have had periods lasting 17 days....and I go through about 5 24 packs of pads during that time frame. I really feel sorry for you. I can only hope that you don't have the pain along with it. (I have endometriosis)

Everyone else is right. The only thing that you CAN do is go get a pap. I know, they suck...but once everything gets started, it's not so bad. I have to go get one every 3 months....I have pre cancerous cells. I had the exact same problem that you do.

As for bc, I have been on several different pills, the shot, the patch and I've also tried the ring. The shots only made it worse. The ring wouldn't stay in while I was on my period. The patch left a rash where ever I put it. All in all, none of them did me any good. They made me very moody, I never had a normal period...and the pain just got worse.

Please go to your doctor..for the sake of all of those of us who can't. I don't have health insurance and I swear sometimes I would trade my HOUSE for some relief. I can't sleep at night. I've lost 7 different jobs in the past 2 years because of this. The pain would literally cripple me. I've been in the hospital plenty of times from passing out due to pain. I've been in there for being on the verge of hemmoraging. I spend around $30 a month for pads and otc stuff I know won't work. It'll be hard for me to concieve the day my hubby to be and I decide we want kids.

Not only is this physically draining me of everything I've got at times, but it also drains me mentally. I lay in bed and cry at night because I can't get to sleep...and because I know I won't be able to go to work the next day and that I could possibly lose another job. And because I know that my fiance is laying next to me awake praying that somehow I start feeling better.

I wouldn't wish this upon my worst enemy. Please, please, please....go see a doc. Don't allow your life to be controlled by this as mine has. This stuff only gets worse.

I hope I helped.

first thing... yes pap smears are scary but you should have one done anyways. especially if you are sexually active!!! if you do decide to get on BC, i think yaz is pretty good. my periods are super light and only last for like 3 days. but if you don't want to get on the pill try exercizing every day and eating healthy. usually if you run or something, it makes periods lighter and helps with cramps too. but you really should go see a doctor as scary as it might be... have a best friend go with you or something. good luck!

Well the best advice I can give you is try not to stress to much, stress can make you period come more often. Also try taking a nice warm bath and lay down and relax for a while. I sometimes have heavy periods and I find taking a break from the things that Iam doing sometimes help.

I strongly suggest you get a pap smear. There could be a medical reason your periods are getting worse.
I don't know what your hang-ups are about a pap smear. They are important for basic female health, the same way that immunizations are needed for a healthy body.
Please don't let your fears get in the way of your well-being. If it helps, bring a trusted friend along to hold your hand. Ask your doctor to tell you step by step the procedures that will take place. Ask what to expect.
Good luck!
