Both of my grandmothers were deathly afraid of thunder and lightening and they passed this fear on to me and it took me well into adulthood to kick the fear.
One grandmother would get everyone out of there bed because the box springs and mattresses had metal in them and the other would find a spot in a corner of her home and sit thee quietly until the storm passed and you could not speak .It was as if you did it would bring it to her home or something.
I did not want to pass this fear on to my family so it was kick the fear or pass it on. I knew that there was nothing that I could do to stop the storms or keep them from hitting our home but still I would be frightened . Then one day I made up my mind that enough was enough and now I sleep right through them.

I too have issues with thunder and lightning...I have never resorted to sitting in the closet but often I find myself crawling in bed and hiding under the covers. I seem to do better if I am not alone during a storm and have even attepted to force myself to watch out the window as the lightning streaks and the thunder breaks it gets easier each time. Of course I make hubby sit with me, if I am alone I find a dark room and curl up. I guess the best way to get over any fear is to face it. Good Luck.

I am deathly afraid of thunderstorms....I live in oklahoma so we get them pretty bad. When I was little i would always be the first one in the basement or closet even before they put us in a tornado watch or warning. So I know exactly how you feel. The only thing that really calms me down is if i'm talking to someone. My husband knows that as long as i get my mind off of it i won't flip out and panic. But i really don't have any other ways of calming myself down. I just suggest finding something that will keep yourself busy and take your mind off of it. Good Luck!!
