It is about having "an open mind". And not so much, my opinion differs from yours.??

When I was younger my parents took me to a special doctor because they suspected I had ADD. I had to take an IQ test and they discovered that I had an overly high IQ, especially for a 7 year old. The doctor told my parents that I just lacked the knowledge of the obvious, like how to clean and what to do with food. Obviously, I've gotten better at that, but at that age, I knew several languages, I was very advanced in mathematics and I knew a huge amount on the brain, I just didn't know the normal stuff.

No. Common sense is obtained through experience or active learning, while book learning is obtained in class and from passive learning. Smart just measures how much learning one has done. Since passive learning can (but isn't always) faster and easier one can appear to accumulate more knowledge that way.
It takes time to accumulate each. Some seem to specialize in one or the other.
You will find that the definition of common sense varies from person to person. What you regard as completely obvious common sense will make absolutely no sense to someone else and they will regard it as rather stupid. In some cases the folks that "don't have common sense" know that doing something differently than the common way will actually get them further. I've seen several people complain that whoever did a particular task hand absolutely no common sense, then do the task over again. When the next person came by, they had the same reaction.
One could turn the question around and ask "If someone has a lot of common sense, does that mean that they are actually quite stupid?" or more politely "Do people who aren't very smart have more common sense?" The answer again is "no".

I wouldn't say that it's when you get intelligent. I'd say it's when people focus on learning one particular subject so much, all their brain power is channeled towards that subject. I know people with PhD's in Genetic Engineering, but they can't figure out how to open the damned door on a sterilizer. In fact, I might not be super intelligent, but I"ve noticed that I'm focusing so much on learning graphic design and web programming, that I feel sort of stupid when I talk to people now. I say and do stupid stuff that I never would have done. It's like my mind just forgets to think about the stuff before it happens...

I think its true. Smart people tend to think over possibilities and alternatives, and these usually include negative outcomes; so they have to start considering the risk of each alternative, and so on, and the whole thing breaks down hard because of the resulting complexity.
The not-so-smart person would normally go with his or her gut, which in the final result is probably no more riskier or safer than the smart guy's final decision.
And I have a Ph.D, so I should know what I am talking about, I hope....:-))

I believe that this cannot be applied to everyone who's smart. The thing is, when you're smart, the more common sense you should actually have.
But then, I have to agree with you. There are times that when a person is soo smart, he tends to make things really complicated. He goes round and round in circles, only ending up with the most basic solution.

To an extent I think it is true.
As people get smarter, they tend to pay less and less attention to the everyday common things that are the stuff of common sense. It becomes too trivial and boring. As attention wanes, the skillset atrophies. They reallocate their edge - their "sharpness" - to loftier pursuits. Thus, everyday tasks fall by the wayside.
My, what a piece of eloquent b.s. the preceding paragraph is!

it all depends on what you consider common sense and what you don't.... what i may perceive as common sense may not seem like common sense to you, vice versa.
we are all human and therefore have different life experiences, aptitutes, skills and personalities and view the world through different perspectives.
what i just wrote here for example seems like 'common sense' to me but undoubtfully some people will completely disregard my view and express different oppinions and express what they consider to be 'common sense'. .
