...and that goes for both liquid and solids. Does this mean that we are eating the wrong things or that our bodies are very inefficient "machines"?

Our bodies are very , very inefficient machines.

Human evolution is in the trend to shorten the digestive tract thereby favours inefficiency. Compare Australopethecus. Some fellow our ancestors drove to extinction in Africa.

If we expelled 100% of what we take in, the whole process would be worthless, and we'd be dead. So obviously, if we keep on living, we are extracting what we need from our foods and air and water, to maintain life and energy. What does "inefficient" have to do with anything?

thats normal. in digesting we take out what we need and then get rid of everything else.
