First don't traumatize him by forcing it. Late afternoon/early evening walks with him will reinforce his confidence level as apparently there is some fear of the dark. After a few weeks, then try bicycle rides together...timing it so that it will being to grow dark. Then progress to car rides that are timed for dusk. Obviously something has make a deep impression on him about dark and motion, perhaps a film, or even a true life event and any psychologist will tell you that he must slowly be changed to accept things. Gentle conversations to help him understand that his fear is groundless, but patience, not force, must be used to calm his fears. Perhaps even a simple device such as a flashlight might help...it reassures him of the availability of light...sort of a security blanket.

something happened. especially if this is a sudden onset. find out what. Don't make him feel stupid for this fear. Ask him if he's seen, "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" or if someone he knows, was killed in a car wreck, at night. Regardless of the reason, he's going to have to start riding in a car, after dark, especially if he wants any kind of social life, as a teenager, so you've got to start coming up with reasons why you and he need to go somewhere, AFTER DARK. sounds like a good plot for a teenage murder movie. Just don't go to a deserted area of town, then suddenly slam on your brakes and scream.

First you need to find out why he is afraid. In the mean time, let him have a small light (tap light, small flashlight) till he feels the need for it is gone.

Hey, let him be scared....you won't have to worry about him getting a girl in the back seat!

Only kidding....discuss with him why he feels this way and try to find the root of this. I'll bet it goes back to some scary movie or story he has heard. Then you can discuss that. Finding the reason is the fastest way to the cure.

maybe you should find out why he feels that way...is it because he heard something or seen something that has made him feel like something bad might happen?? If you can't solve it, some counseling will definitely do some good.
