My wife is out during the week of Halloween on a business trip and I'm left for costumes and to be frank I have almost no clue what I'm doing.

My 13 year old son is bent on making the perfect video game costume. He's done a good job on them. Yes I said them. He's made a "ranger" and "assassin" outfit from the game Guild Wars. Yeah I think they're cool, and he did a good job on them, but I just don't want him Trick or Treating and scaring the crap out of everyone he passes. I mean he's even got a wig and a real traditional bow, for the ranger outfit, and a pair of semi-real daggers for the other. I really don't want to crush his idea, just to tone it down so he doesn't become the target of the neighborhood bullies.

Children scare much less easily these days than they used to. Believe me, a ranger or assassin isn't going to scare some poor kid to death when there are elaborate undead designs going around. Your child's costume seems more built to impress than anything else... As for bullies, again, a wow-worthy costume isn't going to attract anything but admiration, but if you're really worried about it, send him out with a few friends or go with him yourself.

Remember that he's worked hard on these costumes and might feel hurt that you want him to change them. If it's truly going to become a problem, explain to him why you need him to tone it down a bit and only change a few details so the majority of the costume goes unedited.

I'm sure the two of you will be able to discuss it and work things out. :) Good luck and Happy Halloween!

If he did it himself at age 13, you should let him wear the costume. If it needs to be "toned" down. Suggest two or three things to tone down and let him decide which one(s); it's easier on them if they make the choice on what to do. Just pick your battles. If you mention three things, tell him he must choose two; you get the idea.

If you're worried about bullies, why don't you "tag" along, either right with him or a-ways back behind.

Kudos to your 13 year old for being so creative! That's great.

well, i myself, am a huge gamer. even at the ripe age of 23. and i dress up as game people. last year...luigi. this year, sora from kingdom hearts II. kids will want to. infact, some of them might be better ones and others will enjoy it. my best idea is try to push him to more family friendly ones by chance. things like guildwars is VERY extreme. really shouldnt be anything wrong with game people as long as u pick the right ones. just like with any other costume catagory. and u shouldnt worry to much about bullies. usually the more alabrate designs will wow peers before have them as targets

GTA, Resident Evil, and Mortal Kombat, are actually not for babies; as a results of fact of this they have letter scores. I say if a interest makes you opt to harm somebody or something, possibly you're to youthful for the interest.

Hmmmmm......say he'll get less candy if he doesn't tone down his custom or don't let him go trick or treating if he doesn't tone down his custom.
