The verb is digging. It shows action. The subject is a plural one, so "is", I think should be "are". You can always check your answer by turning it into a statement to see if it is right. Martha and her mother are digging a hole in their garden. It is so late at night. Right????

the verb is ''is''.it should be ''are'' ''martha and her mother'' is plural.plural subject---plural verb in this case ''are''.singular subject calls for a singular verb for which''is'' could be used.actully the verb is complex,''is digging'' should be ''are digging''.

The verb: "is"--a form of to be
The correct sentence: Why are Martha and her mother...
"Are" is used in the 3rd person plural and the "you" form of "to be." "Is" would be the 3rd person singular.
