I need to do an oral presentation and one of my requirements is to paraphrase the essay. But what does paraphrase exactly mean?

It literally means to put something into your own words.. Like a Cliff Notes(that is what it was called when I was in school at least - that short book that went over the story in an actual book.. the easy way out of reading it..)
Basically - giving, (in your opinion) and more importantly- in your own words( without plagarizing... copying the original text) - the main points.. give the main idea, topics & supporting points..

Oh, to paraphrase means to reword something that your teacher told you in words that mean the same but you must avoid using the original words at all cost.
paraphrase - rewording for the purpose of clarification.
I guess this is English or English Lit?, and you are paraphrasing essays, poems, book summaries, play summaries. The list goes on and on..
Use the dictionary and thesaurus, a book called synonyms and antonyms. and change the words lol, AFter a while, rephrasing becomes second nature to you. This is practice your brain and to make you comfortable with the different ways of using the English language.
Another way of learning paraphrasing is to pretend you are explaining to somebody else the subject that you are paraphrasing. You keep on saying it in different words that mean the same as the original until your "student" understand it..

If you paraphrase an essay, that means that you summarized the essay in your own words.
