The duration of spotting can differ, but here are some rules to go by to tell if it is spotting or bleeding:

Spotting is dark red, almost brown.
It is a very small amount, and usually only lasts for a few hours.
It does not contain any clots.

If it is bright, bright red, or contains clots--no matter what the size--this is a problem, assuming you are pregnant, of course. Put your soiled panties in a plastic baggie and go to the emergency room immediately. A doctor will help you from there.

If it is simply spotting, I wouldn't worry. It's completely normal, especially at the beginning and end of pregnancies. But I would tell my doctor at my next visit. Good luck!

Spotting is only a once in a while occurence and should always be taken highly. Any kind of bleeding spotting or not should be consulted by your OB. If u do have spotting it should not be bright red and heavy. It will be like it is said only a few spots when u wipe or maybe a little bit on your panties. Usually it is brown in color and very light, it should never be associated with cramps or backache. Hope this helps..

Sometimes it can be red for a little while, and then turn brown or dark. Most of the time it goes away within a few hours. Likely not even enough to fill one pad over the course of a day. If you are soaking a pad faster than 2 hrs, then it is not spotting. That is heavy bleeding and you should go to the ER immediately.

It is just spots. Small sometimes as big as a dime but very unusual. Should not be happening very often or at all. You should call your doctor and maybe lay down with your legs up on pillows. Relax a lot of things will make you spot. Sex, stress just to name a few.

pinkish or brownish. It shouldnt last a full day. There should only be a few spots when you wipe, not even enough for a pad. If its dark red or enough for a pad then its not spotting, its your period if your not pregnant and if you are then you need to go to the hospital immediatly because it could be something wrong. Hope that everything works out for you!

spotting is nothing like having a period. It is a dime amount or so and is sometimes red and sometimes pink. You shouldn't be spotting at all. My doctor told me if that should ever happen to call her. If you have cramps with that then call your doctor now.
