Masterofnone could be right, it could be the alternator causing the noise. But it is possible that the spark plug wires could cause the same problem too. Make sure your plug wires are "radio suppressed" or something to that effect. If they are your first answer might be right.

Do you have, and are you able to use a DIGITAL volt meter?
Connect the DVM across the battery, and place the control on A.C.Volts. Start the car. Do you see anything more than .175 VAC? If you do, you may be losing the alternator. The diode bridge inside may be failing, and there is no reason to try to repair it.
Replay the alternator, and check the new alternator for the AC voltage as well.
It isn't supposed to be AC voltage, as the system is DC. The battery doesn't like AC, and the computer gets really confused with AC.
The "whine" in the radio is one of the first signs of an impending failure.
If there is less than .175 VAC at the battery, then look to a possible failure at the radio, or one of the noise suppressors in the electrical system.
Good Luck

i don't have alot of experiance with toyotas but the problem you described is your ignition noise coming through your radio from the wires and distributor. its not gonna hurt anything and i'm not totally sure but i think if you change your distributor or the wires you may be able to get rid of it. other wise just let a mechanic know about it. but thats the issue i've seen it on alot of other cars, i think changing your wires and cap might be the way to go.

You need to buy a filter for the wire...it only cost's a few dollars. I put a head unit into my car...then when i get on the gas it sounds like a turbo, its a interference with wires and your alternator. The filter just takes it out, it's nothing big. Also, check the wires, you may be able to move them away some.
