I've lived in Boston, and in San Francisco.
I'd have to say that California is more liberal, hands down.
There's a Puritannical twang to the Massachusetts liberalism, an East Coast stiff-upper lip that doesn't exist on the Left Coast.

California ranks as more liberal, despite Massachusetts being the only state in which same sex marriages are legal.
New Mexico and New York shared the top spot on the liberal end of the rankings, followed by New Jersey, Washington and California. Massachusetts is sixth.
Ohio and South Dakota were tied for last.
This is according to a new study that that ranks states in terms of reproductive and same-sex rights.
I believe that if the study would have incorporated the prevailing political opinions of each state’s citizens, MA would be ranked higher (more liberal) while CA would be ranked lower (slightly less liberal).
A different nationwide study released by the nonpartisan Bay Area Center for Voting Research (BACVR) ranks the political leanings of every American city and finds that Detroit, Michigan is the most liberal and Provo, Utah the most conservative.

California because of San Francisco and Hollywood. BUT.......OREGON wins hands down. This is the land where abortion was legal long before Roe. They are the only state in the nation with euthanasia lite. The mayor of our largest city rides bikes with "Critical Mass" a group of anarchists. They had "Trey Arrow" sitting on a window ledge for months to protest logging. We would rather save insects and fish than human beings. The court of appeals just decided that we have a RIGHT TO PRIVACY FOR OUR GARBAGE. Kid you not. The Supreme Court doesn't even believe this. No other state has legalized assisted-suicide. People hear more about California and New York because of their large populations so they are often thought of as the most liberal.

I give a shout out to Massachusetts but I have to say my home, California is the more liberal state. We have the most mixed melting pot of culture you will find versus any other state and because of that we are most liberal.

While there are some very liberal places in CA, overall MA is more liberal.
Some significant statistics:
There are 3 registered Democrats for every one registered Republican in MA.
In CA, 43% of registered voters are Democrats, while 34% are Republican.
Gay marriage is legal in MA.
MA was the only state in the union to select George McGovern for President.
Arnold Schwarzneger is the governor of CA.

MA. CA passed legislation aimed at immigration reform. They are very liberal but there is a much higher percentage of conservatives there than there is in MA. CA couldn't get gay marriages approved even after hundreds of ceremonies were performed by a CA judge.
In MA there is no voice of reason.

Vermont.
We have a socialist congressman, same sex marriages, organic farms, lax pot laws, no nudity laws, and sky-high taxes. In fact, the state is the largest employer in the state! Definitely liberal - pushing communism.

I live in CA, and it is liberal in parts and conservative in others. It's a big state so it depends on where you live. Mass is probably the same.
